LG is about to launch later this quarter its latest Super Multi Blue hybrid drive – GGC-H20LI – reading both Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD formats. Several online sources have claimed LG is also to unveil a 6x BD burner, the GGW-H20LI.
Although LG is a member of the BD Association, the company has also adopted the HD DVD format for its blue-laser optical disc drives as business strategy, similar to its developing Super Multi triple-format DVD burners in the past.
While the LG GGC-H20LI gains the upper hand over the Pioneer BDC-S02, a BD Combo drive, with its additional HD DVD playback support, its sales price of $399 is considerably higher than the $299 pricetag for the Pioneer model, the sources indicated. The 6x BD burner is to be priced around $499.
As attested by the 'LI' suffix, both drives are also said to support LightScribe technology for etching labels on compatible media.
