Game on as Nintendo goes green with Livewire/AGI-Shorewood innovation

Two years in development, creative agency Livewire and printing and packaging solutions partner AGI-Shorewood have delivered their environmentally-friendly green card into the retail channel across Europe for Epay, the global pre-paid product provider and distribution network, with Nintendo the latest brand to switch its gift cards from PVC to a new green card.

With most of their products having a single use it was seen logical for Nintendo, who has massive distribution through Epay, to switch to the green card concept. Unlike PVC cards, which do not biodegrade and are made from 57% chlorine (derived from industrial grade salt) and 43% carbon (derived predominantly from oil / gas via ethylene), the green card is made up of board sourced from FSC forests and a compostable eco-laminate which are much better for the environment once the card has been disposed of.

Unlike PVC cards, which will remain in landfill indefinitely, the green cards will biodegrade in landfill in around 90 days. In addition to the environmental benefits, due to fewer elements making up the green card, it can be produced in 2-3 weeks compared to 6-12 weeks and significantly cheaper than PVC cards.
