Sony faces Blu-ray patent lawsuit

Orinda Intellectual Properties USA Holding Group has launched a lawsuit against Sony claiming the company violated some of its patents related to Blu-ray technology.

Sony has allegedly infringed on a patent that broadly describes "methods for recording and reproducing information via optical disc," according to the Aug. 20 lawsuit in the Texas Eastern District Court.Orinda has named Sony Corp., Sony Electronics, Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Computer Entertainment America as the defendants in the lawsuit.

Orinda is requesting a jury trial, and wants royalties, for Sony to stop manufacturing the PlayStation 3 game console, and any other Blu-ray product Sony offers.

"Orinda has been and will continue to be damaged as a result of Defendants' infringing conduct," Orinda said in a statement published on the company's web site. "Defendants' infringing conduct will continue unless permanently enjoined by this court."

This is the second lawsuit that Sony is facing related to Blu-ray. Last year Target Technology sued Sony for a Blu-ray patent infringement. The case was dismissed later.
