Two studios have recently announced initiatives to promote sales of their DVD titles with promotions aimed at cell phone and mobile device users.
Universal Studios Home Entertainment will give mobile phone users a sneak peak at DVD bonus features and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has launched FoxStore Mobile, a new mobile commerce site that allows consumers to search, find and buy their favourite Fox filmed entertainment available on DVD and Blu-ray Disc anytime, anywhere from a mobile device.
Universal began by offering mobile phone users a behind-the-scenes clip from the Heroes: Season 2 DVD a week before the disc streets. It is also making available a deleted scene from The Office: Season 4, prior to its 2 September DVD release. The clips are available to customers of Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T by texting a code on their phones.
Fox consumers can text to buy DVD and Blu-ray Disc with the first such available release being Street Kings starring Keanu Reeves and Forest Whitaker. Again, this can be done by texting a code.
