Disney and Sony Pictures Entertainment plan to let South Koreans rent movies via video-on-demand while they are still playing in cinemas, reports The Wall Street Journal. Because it kips the theatrical window, this business model is controversial for cinema chains. It is being tested in South Korea after years of failed efforts in the US market.
"The experiments mark the first time major American studios have offered viewers anywhere the option of buying a ticket to see a movie [in the cinema] or to rent it at home from a cable, Internet or satellite-television provider," writes The WSJ.
