Singulus test produced 3-layer 100GB Blu-ray Disc on new replication line

German disc replication tool maker Singulus Technologies has developed a new replication line under the product name BLULINE III for the manufacturing of triple-layer Blu-ray Discs with a storage capacity of 100GB.

Pushing Blu-ray Disc's frontier, the triple-layer BD Discs with 100GB storage capacity is seen as the preferred playback medium for the new 4K technology. With a new data compression method for the ultra-high definition technology, the storage volume per information layer can be increased from 25GB to 33GB. As the Blu-ray Disc Association is currently discussing possible specifications for a new global standard, Singulus says it is already proposing a "marketable concept" for a new replication line.

"Just in time for the market introduction of the new ultra-high definition television technology (4K or Ultra-HD), we completed the development of the production technology for the new triple-layer Blu-ray Discs with 100GB storage capacity," said Dr.-Ing. Stefan Rinck, CEO. He said the company's Optical Disc segment so far this year has been "very positive overall."

By August, Singulus received significantly more orders for Blu-ray Disc production machines than in the prior-year period. "The positive life cycle of the Blu-ray Disc will continue for some years with the launch of the new ultra-high definition television format," Rinck added.
