The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) has formed a 3-D task force made up of members from the motion picture, consumer electronics and IT sectors, to ease “the integration of 3-D technology into the Blu-ray Disc format,” according to a statement from the group.

“Blu-ray disc is the ideal platform for bringing 3D technology to mainstream home entertainment. The format has been widely embraced by consumers, and the 1080p picture quality and overall experience have become the standards against which all other high-definition delivery platforms are measured,” a statement by the Blu-ray disc association reads.

Makers of consumer electronics as well as content have been talking about stereoscopic 3D Blu-ray standard for about a year now, but without a solid standard the technology will never take off. At present there are some Blu-ray releases that come with anaglyph red-blue glasses that provide quite low-quality 3D experience.

It may be expected that standard stereo 3D BD format will include 120Hz HDTVs as well as shutter glasses, which offer higher-quality experience, but many users feel dizzy after watching a movie in such mode.

“Blu-ray disc’s capacity, flexibility and incomparable picture quality coupled with the activities of the BDA’s 3D task force sets the stage for a 3D home entertainment specification that establishes another industry standard and enables an in-home 3D consumer experience unmatched by any other delivery mechanism,” said the BDA in the statement.

The BDA has not revealed details and when exactly the specifications are set to be defined.

Some makers of consumer electronics expect the standards to be finalized in 2010 – 2011 timeframe, however, it may be too optimistic prediction.
