Verbatim to launch world's first Mini BD Media

Verbatim has announced what it says is the world's first mini BD-R/RE media, measuring 8cm in diameter and providing 7.5GB of capacity. The MKM Mini BD media will be available this month in Japan to coincide with the new Hitachi BD-compatible camcorder, and will be rolled out in the rest of the world as the camcorders become available in other regions.

This capacity translates to one hour of continuous high definition video capture time (two hours standard definition) on a single side, with the camcorders able to record directly to the disc. The mini BD media has the same specifications as normal size media, according to parent company MKM, including MKM's proprietary recording layers and hard coat with anti-static and anti-scratch properties for added protection against scratches, fingerprints and dust particles that can occur during normal camcorder and home use.

The discs will be produced at MKM's optical disc manufacturing facility in Mizushima, Japan. Verbatim will be exhibiting at September's GITEX show in Dubai, with a focus on external HD drives and the unveiling of the company's new global design covering all packaging, websites and support materials.
